Abstract

This paper examines the film version of a "zarzuela" as an example of a deconstructionist approach carried out by the film-maker from an ironic standpoint and applied to an outmoded genre on which the audience had turned their back. This ironic look and the metafictional devices it makes use of entitle us to define the "reading" proposed by Vajda as a hazardous ground-breaking perfomance which subverts at once the generic patterns which his adaptation initially adopts (the «zarzuela» film), the idealistic orientation that Spanish films had used so far when undertaking literary adaptations, and the narrative model prevailing in our film industry and defined by a rhetorical and conventional classicism. Vajda's aesthetic option is, furthemore, closely connected with an ideological option, which is made manifest by the attack on the conservatism of the late 20th century Spanish lower bourgeoisie carried out by the film.
