Abstract

The PhD thesis An approach to the philosophical theatre of Antonio Buero Vallejo is an exploration of his dramatic works from a double perspective. On the one hand, from the point of view of the Greek philosophy in which theatre means knowledge, and on the other hand, from a modern Spanish philosophy. The thesis has three parts. In the first part, the philosophical fundamentals of theatre and its influence on the formation of the concept of”person” are explained. In the second part, eight representative works of Buero? ideology (Weltanschauung) are analyzed: Historia de una escalera, En la ardiente oscuridad, Las Meninas, El Concierto de San Ovidio, El tragaluz, La doble historia del Doctor Valmy, La Fundación y Mito. In the third part, the tragic hope in Antonio Buero? work is discussed and his ethical commitment with the man, his historic obligations with Spain and his aesthetic commitments with theatre are highlighted. The thesis comes close to uncovering the figure of an exemplary person: he is a universal dramatist compromised with his time
