Resum

The rising incidence of Type 1 diabetes globally suggests the need for continuous monitoring of incidence. Objectives. 1. To analyze the incidence of type 1 diabetes among the children�s population in Extremadura from 1996-2011. 2. To find out the epidemiological characteristics. Material and Methods. Retrospective study of population under 14 years old and type 1 diabetes in Extremadura from 1996-2011. Sources: primary source, hospitals, and secondary sources, diabetic camps and associations. Results. 577 children. Completeness of registration: 98.9%. The age-adjusted incidence: 22.7 cases/100,000, highlighting the female group of 10-13 years (30.5/100,000). It is appreciated annual increase progressively, around 6.6%. The Annual Percentage Change was analyzed, highlighting 1 significant change in the term trend: the incidence increase annually by 6.6% until 2005, followed by a plateau (p<0,01). 60.2% live in rural areas. 22% of cases presented a family history of DM1. 17.2% of patients had associated autoimmune diseases (thyroid disease: 10.2% and coeliac disease: 5,2%). 21.5% of patients presented ketoacidosis diabetic at the onset of type 1 diabetes.
