Abstract
Systemic autoimmune diseases (SAD) have a varied clinical expression and can affect any organ. They are rare and usually affect young people. The etiology is not known but it is believed that an environmental agent can disturb the immune system, which does not recognize its own antigens, in genetically predisposed individuals. Diagnosis is often delayed because its clinical features appear along several years. The therapeutic arsenal available is extensive but is not exent from complications, as they are drugs that suppress the immune system and promote the development of infections and even tumors. Biologic therapies have become very important due to they are directed against specific molecular targets involved in the immune system. The EAS produce a significant impact on patient quality of life, both physical, functional, occupational and social level. The diagnosis and early treatment can minimize the negative impact on the life of the patient with EAS. Another important aspect is pregnancy because it can exacerbate the disease and produce maternal and fetal complications. It is imperative that the patient is informed of these risks to plan her pregnancy when the disease is inactive and can be controlled with non-teratogenic drugs.
