Abstract

The thesis deals with of the public library in Mallorca and the historical circumstances of its opening. There are two libraries that relate to the development of public reading on the island. The first was formed by joining the three libraries of the Jesuits Colleges ¿Montesión and San Matrín de Palma and San Ignacio de Pollença- which is aimed at the Literary University of Mallorca. The second, already in operation, was the Episcopal Palace that becomes public when it receives duplicates of the books from the aforementioned libraries. Research has focused on the University Library and on two aspects: the analysis of the features of the library and the historical events that lead to its formation and subsequent development until the University disappears.
