Abstract

In this paper we present a review made from searches of references in document databases of Scopus and PsycInfo, crossing the concepts under analysis, Disability and Drugs, and trying to add a criterion for prioritizing actual references , Authors have been able to select a group of 35 relevant documents since 1996 that have allowed us to approach the state of development of research in this field internationally. We present conclusions derived from the contents found, and among them stands to note that the drug problem appears more pronounced among people with disabilities than in those without. It seems that one of the problems of this reality derives from the physical and conceptual inaccessibility of programs and services that leave out important percentages of persons with disabilities. On the other hand, the perception of disability benefits appears to have varying effects on people with disabilities, in a negative way for those facing employment, but in a positive one for those facing the treatment participation, and apparently with no effect on substance use. Finally, and most dramatically, certain characteristics related to disability in conjunction with drug abuse are associated with violence, especially gender violence and also to enter into drug use when becoming a victim of violence.
