Resum
This article puts forward a number of arguments supporting the thesis that universities are experiencing, or may experience in the near future, a set of important changes brought about by technological and social trends towards digitization. A basic definition of the digital transformation of Higher Education Institutions is provided as well as a theoretical framework that breaks down the process of digital transformation into seven dimensions or spheres of activity. Additionally, the aspect of governance of the process of digital transformation is examined. For each of these eight levels, several variables are defined, eighteen in all. The theoretical model can be applied to the design of further empirical research, with both quantitative and qualitative approaches, for the rigorous and systematic analysis of the implications of digital transformation for Higher Education Institutions.
