Resumen
Objective: comparative study of the dog, rabbit and rat as experimental animal models in order to propose a decision algorithm to choose the best animal for each study. Methods: 5 dogs, 5 rats and 5 rabbits were used. Operators conducted an evaluation test. Furthermore, a search was conducted in PubMed to analyze and compare the use of a particular animal model according to the Objectives of the Revised Study (ORS). Results: the rats were used for evaluation of bone tissue (67.2 percent ORS). Rabbits for evaluating materials (33.7 percent ORS), evaluation of bone tissue (45.2 percent ORS) implant stability (4.1 percent ORS), methods of measuring bone (3.7 percent ORS) infection (1 percent ORS) or the effect of the laser on the implant surface (2.5 percent ORS). Dogs for evaluating materials (31.3 percent ORS), bone tissue (22.9 percent ORS), grafts (8.4 percent ORS) implant loading (6.1 percent ORS ), the technique of placing the implants (6.1 percent ORS), and evaluation of soft tissues (6.1 percent ORS). Conclusions: to choose the most appropriate experimental animal model should consider the study objective, non-operating variables and operating variables.
