Resumen

Introduction: Burnout syndrome is considered a health problem, and maybe related to different factors. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of the economic crisis on burnout syndrome among spanish private dentists. A cross sectional (email survey) study was carried out among Spanish dentists (n= 1913). Socio demographic and occupational factors were collected and questions about possible changes due to the economic crisis were included. The MBI GS (Maslach Burnout Inventory General Survey) was used to evaluate burnout syndrome. Results: Twenty nine per cent of our sample presented burnout syndrome. There was more likelihood of suffering burnout among dentists who were dissatisfied with their income (odds ratio: 3.2; 95%-CI: 2.0 5.1), or when they had had to make cuts in their expenses or amongst those who thought that their income in the next 12 months would be worse (odds ratio: 3.0; 95%-CI: 2.0 4.3) or the same (odds ratio: 1.9; 95%-CI: 1.3 2.6). Problems in conciliating work and family life 'very often' or 'sometimes' were also significantly associated with the presence of burnout. Conclusion: Changes caused by the economic crisis significantly influenced the presence of burnout syndrome among Spanish private dentists.
