Abstract
In the last years it is becoming evident the growing need of evaluating the scientific activity by objective and transparent means. This will allow us to better know the scientific systems of each country and region, evidencing their problems and advantages, and will enable us to adopt measures to foster their development. Scientific researchers have the greatest interest in using quantitative and qualitative scientific methods with the objective of evaluating their own activity, provided that their professional activity is evaluated objectively, independently and transparently. The present study provides an insight into the problems and perspectives of the research project "Analysis and evolution of the scientific production in the area of Arts and Humanities in the Canary Islands during the period 1989-2009", funded by the Government of the Canary Islands through the Canary Islands Agency of Research, Innovation and Information Society. In addition, it presents the preliminary results of the research in the areas of Arts and Humanities in the two Canarian Universities.
