Resumen

Through several examples, this contribution aims at making a synthesis diagnosis to advance proposals about the horticultural landscape which characterizes the peripheral environment in some cities of Castile and Leon. The objective is to provide criteria and references for their consideration and management which may be equally extendable to other fringes of urban areas in this region and others. So, the peri‐urban horticultural space are the central goal of this contribution, taking examples at different scales (large regional agglomeration, medium cities and small city), which explains their differential treatment. The methodological analysis will cover different steps: spatio‐temporal evolution of these units and their crops; landscape dimension of vegetable gardens and the patrimonial and identity features that can survive associated with them; what is the functionality they maintain with the urban space they surround and how their protection, management and maintenance are contemplated in the different city planning instruments; how is the coexistence between the traditional horticultural space and the more recent initiatives such as "urban vegetable gardens" or other similar. It is expected that the results obtained will contribute to rethink the concept of "proximity agriculture”.
