Abstract

The principles of efficiency and sustainability must be considered in the management of any infrastructure. Ports have not escaped to this general trend. Therefore, the Spanish Law 33/2010 emphasizes the necessity of taking measures to improve the efficiency of Spanish ports, increasing their competitiveness in a strong competition international context. This paper analyses the efficiency of the Spanish ports using a non-radial DEA model, the Russell Measure, which allows obtaining an efficiency score for each of the inputs analyzed, that is, the different types of traffic: solid and liquid bulks, general commodities and containers. Hence, the strengths and weakness of each port can be identified showing the type of traffic on which is necessary act in order to increase the efficiency and sustainability of ports.
