Resumen
Geomorphological and paleontological records present in karst caves can complement surficial paleoenvironmental records generally poor preserved in glaciated areas, which are extended above 600-900 m in the Cantabrian Region. For this purpose, we studied the geomorphology of a karst cave in Picos de Europa and searched palaeontological remains in order to provide new paleoenvironmental data of this region. The geomorphological study reveals thepresence two allochthonous alluvial sequences dated in 84-65 ka and ~36 ka by OSL. The first sequence includes fragments of dental enamel of cf. Pliomys coronensis, an unusual evidence during MIS 4 in the NW Spain, especially in high areas. Besides, remains of Rupicapra pyrenaica found in the cave were dated in 34-32 cal ka by AMS radiocarbon dating. All these evidences allow us to extend the altitudinal and temporal distribution of these species during the MIS 4-3 in the Cantabrian Region pointing out the occurrence of glacier-free areas during 84-65 and 34-32 ka in mountains areas located at ~1,400 m altitude.
