The German response to A Woman in Berlin’s first edition in the 1950s compared to its rerelease in 2003 shows the difficulty in facing a traumatic experience: the mass rapes at the end of World War II. When the book is republished in the 21st century, German society is open to a new look at the past. In this new context, the book, along with many other works, will contribute to refining the prevailing discourse regarding “blame”. During her life, the author prohibited any reedition of the book, demanding that it remained anonymous even after her death.
