Abstract

he aims of this contribution are to analyze the image conveyed by cinema of people with hearing and language impairments along history, and to identify the films that convey a positive and realistic image of these people and those that reflect negative or stereotyped images. It has been analyzed more than 70 films, spanning from 1929 to 2011. The main focus of the analyses is on the image that is transmitted of the person with hearing and/or language impairments. In the films analyzed, it has been identified false myths that distort and damage the image of people with hearing and language impairments. We can found characters that associate intellectual disability with hearing impairments, for example, or isolated characters (often, self-imposed isolation) in a poorly inclusive society. Although the image cinema provides of people with people with hearing and language impairments has improved considerably, it is difficult to find films that convey a realistic and faithful image of these people. Cinema still has a long way to go until the images conveyed will be fully adapted to the principles of normalization and inclusion.
