Resumen

Striking changes in metabolism are observed due to cell proliferation and differentiaton. These changes may be partly accounted for by cell cyc1e requirements although differentiaton relies on metabolic changes. In this work, we attempted to investigate the effect of cellto- cell contact on lactate utilization as a source of energy and carbon skeletons. After 14 days in primary culture, astrocytes were replated and the rates of lactate oxidation and lipogenesis were followed over 3d after replating. Under tbis circumstances, tbe rate of lactate utilization decreased by about 40% as compared to that observed after 14d in primary culture. One day after replating, the rates of lactate oxidation observed after 14 days in primary culture were regained. However, the rate of lactate oxidation decreased sharply 3 days after replatig. these results suggest that lactate oxidation is inhibited when cell-to-cell contact is disrupted.
