Abstract

Despite major advances in pharmacologic and endovascular therapies, acute limb ischemia continues to result in significant morbidity and mortality. The incidence of acute limb ischemia may be as high as 1317 cases per 100.000 people per year, with mortality rates approaching 18 % in some series. This is a potentially catastrophic condition that can progress rapidly to limb loss and disability if not recognized and treated promptly. Clinical evaluation includes assessment of limb color and temperature, pulses, and motor and sensory function. Initial management depends on several factors, including the acuity and severity of the ischemia, comorbid conditions and availability of operative and endovascular procedures. After establishment of blood flow by either a surgical or an endovascular approach, it is imperative to identify and treat the underlying etiology. This review will address the contemporary clinical manifestations, diagnosis and treatment.
