Abstract
In this study the evolution (from 1958 to 2006) of the vineyards has been characterized. The study area was located in Bembibre municipality that is placed in the Bierzo Region (province of Leon. Spain). In order to achieve this objective, aerial photographies and ortophotographies of periods 1956-60 and 2002, as well as another digital cartography, have been used (EMD, land cover, infrastructures, etc.). The made work has shown that at the end of 50 years the vine occupied approximated 517 has, whereas at the present time the vineyards occupy 100 has. Also it is demonstrated that this reduction in the area has not been caused by the lack of aptitude of the land, it has caused a great structural change in the landscape and it has supposed the lost of the quality wine potential. The vine is the territorial element that gives identity to the municipality of Bembibre, of there the necessity to preserve it and to demonstrate its utility to contribute to a development based on rural conservation and productive activities.
