Abstract
The methodology to appreciate how citizens perceive noise and its effects has five main stages and one is: Sample stratification. From the survey results, the sample was stratified into homogeneous groups (clusters). All the people within one cluster must have given similar answers to the questions related to noise perception and annoyance due to noise sources. At a later stage, these groups were also characterized using the remaining questions in the survey. This procedure yields a good description of the reality by gathering behaviours and can be used to help taking decisions concerning actions affecting a specific group. When the effect (follow up) of such actions is to be analysed, several randomly individuals are chosen within each group. This is a good way to reduce costs in subsequent phases without damaging the reliability of the results.
