Resumen

The cradle of our European culture, the Mediterranean Sea has been omnipresent in our literature since Ulysses. This geographical and cultural space is also found in medieval literary production. It appears as a paradoxical space: a place of seduction but also of terror. This study is concerned with the analysis of the representation of the maritime expanse, and more precisely of a nouvelle, 1 of 13, titled La Fille du comte de Ponthieu. We then consider the role that the sea plays in this text through the dichotomies essential to medieval civilization: nature/culture and Christian/Saracen.
