Abstract
This paper sets out basic concepts in relation to the Social Economy and the enterprises that form it, with particular attention to cooperatives. By setting out the typical features of these forms of business it aims to show that their particular nature, in which economic and social aspects converge, makes them particularly useful tools for creating jobs in certain fields and for integrating certain groups into the labour market. This has been highlighted repeatedly by different European Community institutions. In this context, social initiative cooperatives deserve particular mention.
