Resum

A study of the quality of life in the EU became especially interesting in the late eighties and the first decade of the nineties, when the availability of high quality information became necessary for policy decisions and their assessment. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the European Union citizens� standard of living, examining in particular whether using or not subjective information makes any difference. When measuring and quantifying the standard of living, various methodologies have been used. However, the most general and important one is probably the social indicators approach, where the idea of quality of life is broken down into several dimensions which are likewise integrated by social indicators. Generally, the methods to build synthetic indicators are very attractive in this field of research, especially where the European Union is concerned.
