Abstract
This article provides information about censorship and inquisition regarding Moreto’s theater. The cases in which scholars have documented censorship of his comedies include the following: "El poder de la amistad" (Moreto’s only autographpreserved), "El príncipe perseguido", "El rey Enrique el Enfermo", "El parecido en la corte", "El rosario perseguido", "Travesuras son valor", "La luna africana", "El lego del Carmen", "San Franco de Sena", "Vida y muerte de San Cayetano", "El bruto de Babilonia" and "La adúltera penitente", "Santa Teodora" (a hagiographic comedy). This article focuses in particular on "La adúltera penitente" which was written around 1651 in collaboration with Jerónimo de Cáncer and Juan de Matos Fragoso (and possibly Calderón de la Barca). This comedy was censored in December 1669, two months after Moreto’s death; its censored passages are of paramount interest.
