Resum

Firstly, our research intends to make a theoretical and critical revision of the social values and the university’s role as the institution in charge of the training of intellectual people and their commitment to citizenship. We also dare to draw up a taxonomy of those values that we consider to be basic and necessary for human coexistence. Later on, we propose an experimental research on the level of assumption and implication of these values in the university Spanish students in order to know the reality that is been lived in a critical situation, which might be the time when, more than in other occasions, people turn to values as a mean to overcome the crisis and propose new ways of development and social progress in order to end up with an open social debate in which the role of institutions and university is being taken into consideration.
