Abstract
Several authors progressively are giving a more important role of the mucus layer of the precorneal tea! film in the long-term, locally applied, ocular medications. In this retrospective and prospective report, the authors compare the status of the ocular surface of patients chronically treated with timolol maleate. Clinical parameters and optic microscopic techniques (the ferning test, staining of mucous by conjunctival impressions, and impression cytology) were studied. The results suggest ocular surface damage after chronic conjunctival application of timolol.
