Résumé

We know that the very act of reading, of analysis, arises from an encounter that affects us, destabilizes us, disturbs us or intrigues us, that it cannot but be related to our own desire. In the case of the film in question, Far from the madding crowd, such encounter is located in the deep impression I got from a very specific scene: the opening scene in which Bathsheba lies down on the back of his horse while Gabriel contemplates her through the bushes. The analytical reading that I propose has sought to highlight the centrality that this scene has in this film adaptation of Thomas Hardy's classic novel (1874) made by Thomas Vinterberg in the year 2015.
