Abstract

The main methods used and results obtained from the application of geomor-phologic and historical criteria, to the delineation of flood zones in the Middle-Low Carrion River (Duero Basin, Palencia, Spain) are presented. These studies have been conducted within the pilot areas pattern of the Spanish National Sys-tem for Flood Zone Mapping, promoted by the Directorate General of Water Management (Ministry of Environment, Rural and Marine Resources) as fulfilling hazard mapping in the new European Directive on assessment and management of flood risk. Finally we discuss the particularities of its application to an alluvial river draining the Spanish highlands to the Atlantic Ocean
