Abstract

Triticale is increasingly used as a forage crop in dehesas. However, its productive behaviour whilegrowing under a tree canopy is still unknown. With the aim of evaluating the effect of the tree onbiomass yield and nutritive value parameters (protein, fibre and lignin), a study was initiated in2014/2015 on three triticale cultivars. With the same objective, the results from 2015/2016 arepresented here. The study was performed in a dehesa in Badajoz (southwestern Spain), sowing 1.5ha with each cultivar. In four trees of each, forage samples were taken twice, in the winter andspring, from three areas: under the tree cover, outside of tree cover influence, and from the borderarea. The trees had a strong and clear influence on the biomass yield and quality parameters of thetriticale forage. Under the specific conditions of the study year, the trees had a positive effect onboth the winter and total herbage yield (with increments of 30% and 34%, respectively). Among thenutritive value parameters, protein and acid detergent fibre were also enhanced by trees, but theneutral detergent fibre was not. None of the cultivars examined showed a special aptitude to growunder tree canopy conditions.
