Resum

The nature of the crust beneath the Central Iberian Zone (CIZ) was assessed by a wide-angle reflection/refraction seismic transect, the ALCUDIA-WA, which extends from the boundary with the Ossa Morena Zone (the Central Unit) to the Cenozoic Tajo Basin. Although the data were recorded using vertical component sensors, the acquisition parameters and the high fre- quency controlled sources used provided not only P waves but the vertical component of well-defined S-waves. The resulting S-wave velocity model was calculated from these data by iterative forward modeling. Jointly with the previously obtained P-wave velocity model (Ehsan et al., 2015), the Poisson’s ratio of the crust is calculated. The resulting physical properties are then compared with laboratory measurements of rock samples in order to constrain the nature and composition of the CIZ crust. The results are then integrated with those previously obtained for the South Portuguese and Ossa-Morena Zones (IBERSEIS wide angle reflection/refraction profile) (Palomeras et al. 2011) providing some light on the composition and evolution of the Variscan orogeny in SW Iberia.
