Abstract
This article focuses on the conceptualization of the term persistence in the field of diachronic graphematics on the French punctuation, by means of four case studies. We will follow the hypothesis of the operability of this concept to explain some pragmatic values of punctuation that have persisted over the centuries, as reading instructions whose purpose is to construct the interpretation of the written discourse. We review the connective value of the point in Old and Middle French, the repetition of quotation and question marks, the principle of alternating signs for hierarchical coordination and the use of the asterisk as a mark of omission
