Resumen

This work presents the characterization of the sequence of Quaternary terraces in the confluence zone of the rivers Júcar and Cabriel river valleys. The study area covers a radius of 10 km from the river confluence near the locality of Cofrentes (Valen- cia). The zone is within the northern area of the Ayora-Cofrentes tectonic corridor in the northeastern sector of the External Prebetic Zone adjacent to southern Iberian Cordillera. Two hundred eighty four control points were analyzed in the terrace system and 23 dates (CENIEH) were obtained by means of different dating methods (OSL, ESR, Th/U). Fourteen terrace levels were identified between +130 m (T1) and +3-4 m (T14) of relative height above the thalwegs. The T1 has an average age of c. 1.5 - 2.0 M.a. as is disrupted by dated volcanic materials from the Agras volcano (Sáenz-Ridruejo and López-Ma- riñas, 1975; Lendínez and Tena, 1980; Silva et al., 2015). The obtained geochronological determinations indicate that the Lower-Middle Pleistocene transit is slightly above T6 (+60 m) which has an ESR age of c. 600 ka and that the beginning of the Upper Pleistocene is located at the T9 terrace (+25-30 m) where numerous OSL data have been achieved with ages between 180 and 82 ka. All this information is being completed, reworked and synthesized to obtain an evolutionary model of the development of these main valleys and their southern tributaries (Jarafuel-Cautabán, Murell, Sácaras, etc.) during the Quaternary. The MINECO-FEDER Research Project CGL2015-67169-P (QTECTSPAIN) has funded this work.
