Résumé
Portugal is a country with a subtitling tradition, compared to its European neighbours where dubbing is the usual practice. The purpose of this research is to study the policies followed for the subtitling of multilingual audiovisual products in subtitling countries such as this one, as opposed to the policies followed in dubbing countries. To this end, a comparative analysis of the subtitling of two multilingual films was carried out: Casse-tête chinois (2013) and The Red Violin (1998). It has been compared the subtitling performed in two countries with a dubbing tradition (France and Germany) and that performed in a country with a subtitling tradition (Portugal). In a second part of the study, professional subtitlers from both areas were interviewed as well, regarding the procedure followed for subtitling this linguistic phenomenon.
