Abstract
Current high energy costs and the environmental impact caused by its use mean an important enough reason to seek energyconsumption reduction in HVAC building systems. On the other hand, guaranteeing an adequate level of indoor air quality (IAQ) requiresventilation air volume flows which adversely affect these systems energy performance. Free cooling techniques applied within HVACinstallations reduce energy consumption when the outdoor conditions are favourable. Energy recovery systems allow maintaining anappropriate indoor air quality without reducing the energy performance of air handling equipment. To this end, they take advantage of theenergy content from the exhaust air flow in order to pre-condition the outside air being supplied. In this chapter, main characteristics of energy recovery and free cooling systems, as well as dimensioning criteria and main applicationsare described.
