Resumen

Hydrogen is being considered as future alternative energy source to fossil fuels. The influence of hydrogen on the mechanical behavior of the 42CrMo4 steel grade has been evaluated by means of internal pressure fracture tests performed on hydrogen precharged notched cylindrical samples. The small notched cylindrical samples were cathodically precharged in 1M de H2SO4 y 0,25 g/l de As2O3 solution with 1.2 mA/cm2 for three hours. The hydrogen content introduced into the samples was determined by means of a hydrogen analyzer, LECO DH603. Burst pressure notably decreased due to the internal hydrogen effect, being this effect more notable as testing time increased. Hence, hydrogen had more time to diffuse ahead the notch tip region, giving rise to the hydrogen embrittlement mechanisms. With the increase in the embrittlement indexes, a change in the fracture micromechanism, from ductile, in the absence of hydrogen, to intermediate (plasticity-related hydrogen induced cracking -PRHIC- and secondary cracks) was appreciated.
