Abstract

The aim of this paper is the study of cut potsherds from the vaccean and roman site of Pintia. Firstly, we focus on the different functional areas in which these elements appear, which verified their presence since the origination of vaccean culture, as well as a reinforcement in their use with the intensification of romanization process. Secondly, a technological and statistical analysis have been undertaken on a selection of individuals from the habitational area of Las Quintanas, due to it is the largest group identified in precise contexts. Therefore, initially a detailed study of two singular accumulations from the Roman Phase is carry out: a hole located in house 1 that contained 182 cut potsherds and a pithos from house 2 with 147 samples. Subsequently, these results are compared with those of the rest of the individuals in the hillfort, which have shed light on the different types and ways of making this kind of objects. Finally, the meaning and possible functionalities of these artifacts are discussed, such as their use as part of counting systems, game counters, covers and/or supports.
