Abstract

This paper is about che Brazilian contribution with volunteers in the so-called "Committees of help to Republican Spain ". The majority of them were officers involved in political struggles against the antidemocratic regime of Getúlio Vargas. Despite their small numbers, some left important written testimonies of their stay in Spain which are now published. This is the case of Homer de Castro Jovin (through the novel Saga (1939), by Erico Veríssimo); Ramón Prieto ("El paso del Ebro", en Los que fueron a España, 1968); José Gay da Cunha (Un brasileiro na Guerra Civil (1946)) and of the recently deceased (September 2005) at the age of93, co-founder of the Workers Party with Lula da Silva, Apolonio de Carvalho, author of the book entitled Vale la pena sonhar (1997).
