Abstract

This paper is concerned with how we can develop a more attentive reading of poetic-literary texts in the context of learning a second language. Starting from the need to develop an attentive look in order to better understand our inner world, the world of the other and the interrelation between both, we propose the use of haiku as a minimal and contained poetry in order to potentialize positive values of attention and care towards the other and its environment. We also outline a didactic device in relation to how to use haiku in the English class based on three poems by the American poet Ezra Pound. It concludes by emphasizing the importance of poetry as a creator of spaces for personal internalization and processes of slow and attentive reading that will result in a better understanding of what is observed, something essential for any education professional.
