In a situation such as the current one in which demands for democratic regeneration and rethinking of the system of political representation are strongly emerging, a historical reflection on parliamentarism makes more sense than ever. In order to know our present, it is convenient to incorporate a historical review of the main milestones in the history of our parliamentarianism. With this purpose in mind, this present contribution will carry out a brief review that will cover, first of all, the study of the Cortes of Castile in the period between 1188 and 1665, to later proceed to the analysis of parliamentarism in the Enlightenment from a historical perspective and from political theory. At the dawn of the 21st century, it is essential to know the past in order to improve the present and rethink the future.
