Abstract

Elena Rodríguez-Bolívar (Granada, 1874-Madrid, 1972) was not an archaeologist, but a highly cultured woman, and a pianist. She was aware of the limitations imposed on her by being born as a woman. On her mother’s side, she was related to Francisco Giner de los Ríos. She married Manuel Gómez-Moreno in 1903. The correspondence between them reveals a woman of strong character, devoted to the professional work of her fiancé and then husband, with whom she shared many “auxiliary tasks”. While he elaborated the Monumental Catalogue of the four provinces entrusted to him: she developed photographs, hand-wrote the Catalogues for their delivery, facilitated his social networkings, gave him advice, accompanied him on some excursions and sorted papers out. Yet, in the intimacy of the letters, she denounced the situation of inequality caused by the different gender roles assigned to each of them
