Abstract

This research presents a comparative analysis of the representation of LGTB+ characters in Spanish-produced series broadcast in prime time on generalist television and those produced by the main streaming platforms, based on two different samples of series; one of these samples has 21 chapters broadcast in the second half of 2017 and throughout 2018 on national generalist channels and the other sample contains 33 chapters of Spanish series originally produced by different streaming platforms. For this purpose, a content analysis was performed by analyzing a total of 1,274 characters (n=514 and n=760, respectively). Among the main results of the research, it was found that there is still an underrepresentation of LGTB+ characters, compared to the demographic data of the Spanish population, although their presence increases slightly in the case of series on streaming platforms. We also found an increase in the number of LGTB+ characters with leading roles with respect to previous studies. Representation figures have improved but LGTB+ characters are not present in the contents of all platforms. On the other hand, no statistically significant relationship was found between sexual orientation and hypersexualization of characters, nor in other aspects, such as the relationship between sexual orientation and violence.
