Résumé

Rainfed alfalfa is cultivated in Tierra de Campos, using an autochthonous ecotype very well adapted to the soil and climatic conditions of this área. The lack of characterization and selection work on this material is a danger for the continuity of this culture, due to the actual rules for seed production. Morphologic and agronomic characters of 97 samples of alfalfa from the área of Tierra de Campos (Spain) were studied. Although large variances were observed in these analyses both within and between samples, a discriminant analysis allowed us to separate the natural population from some commercial cultivars previously used in the región. Several samples have been selected in order to start a breeding program aimed to find uniform plants destined for hay production or for grazing
