Resumen
The aim of this study was to analyze the magnetic properties of a soil profile with contrasting horizons and try to relate them to the properties determined through conventional techniques. The horizons of a soil profile located in Murcia, Spain were described and their physical, chemical, and mineralogical properties analyzed. The following magnetic properties were included: mass magnetic susceptibility, frequency-dependent susceptibility, continuous thermomagnetic curves at low field, isothermal remanent magnetization acquisition and magnetic hardness. Simple linear regressions were used, considering magnetic properties and conventional properties. Detailed description of the soil profile and the results of conventional analyses allowed the identification of an A mollic horizon, a 2CBt, a 3Bt argic horizon, and a 3Ck calcic horizon, as well as textural discontinuity. Magnetite is pedogenetic, and occurs in the A horizon, and is responsible for the magnetization in most cases. The magnetic minerals-SP in the Bt horizons are related to the high percentage of clay. Goethite was detected in the 3Bt and C horizons, in relatively low amounts. The ferrimagnetic minerals decrease with depth; the magnetic properties allowed better characterization of the diagnostic horizons. Three soils were identified in the profile. These results derived from the analysis of the magnetic properties could not be obtained with conventional soil analysis.
