This critical review analyses two recently published books on peasant perceptions of the landscape in medieval England. These works attempt new methodologies for the study of medieval landscapes. Both combine the use of written and material sources, paying particular attention to the analysis of place-names, in order to recover how peasants perceived and represented the territories they inhabited, and how that changed over time. After presenting their theoretical frameworks, the review briefly analyses the fundamental issues that the books address, and then considers how these approaches contribute to assessing the agency of medieval peasants. It then concludes with a brief critical reflection on the relevance of this line of research.
