Abstract
This article analyses the main aspects of a comedy directed by Delbert Mann in 1961 that responds to the textual logic of classical cinema. It revolves around a mysterious object called VIP, within the general framework of a story, that unfolds in the world of advertising, and puts into play the ability of its protagonists to overcome obstacles. Lover Come Back responds to the need to resolve a dispute of conflicting interests that becomes more complicated as events unfold, ending with the reconciliation of the protagonists and the promise of a new life. The allusion to the world of advertising will serve to highlight the function of appearances in the field of personal relationships, to reveal the tricks of a business of dubious morality, and to show their belonging to a system of objects that will be subtly questioned, taking the possibilities of fiction and indirect representation to the extreme.
