Abstract
This paper offers new sociophonetic data on a well-known peculiarity of Castilian-Le-onese speech, the fricativisation of /p b t d k ɡ/ in syllabic coda position. The analysis of a sample drawn from 27 informants from Salamanca determines the vitality of the phenom-enon in formal contexts of read speech: a quarter of the total number of realisations is fric-ative. The variables age and level of education were found to be significant (the higher the age and the lower the level of education, the higher the percentage of fricative allophones and assimilations; conversely, the lower the age, the higher the proportion of occlusives). The combination of age and sex shows that young women are closer to the standard peninsular norm (more occlusives) and women over 65 years of age to the regional norm, as they tend to fricativise as a prestige solution.
