Abstract

Between the 16th and the 17th century, Marie de Gournay, one of the most outstanding women of letters of her time, had to bear a great deal of criticism from those males trying to prevent her from entering the literary Parnassus; among others, the one contained in Saint-Évremond’s La comédie des académistes. Not even her solid education, her contact to people of influence in the highest circles of French society and politics, or having Montaigne’s sincere esteem —who at the same time was astonished by the fact that such a capable and intelligent person could be of female nature— could save the author of Égalité des hommes et des femmes from misogynous attacks.
