Resumen

The Epic of Gilgamesh, a cycle of poems in the Sumerian language written around the 21st century B.C., is one of the earliest testimonies of the human psyche. In this paper, we will recover the legend of the hero Gilgamesh in the light of Joseph Campbell’s analysis of the myth in The Hero with a Thousand Faces. Thus, we will seek to explore to what extent the phases of the hero’s journey are not only a narrative pattern, but also present an archetypal, ontological and anthropological dimension. In this sense, the hero’s adventure, in correspondence with the structure of initiation rites or the process of individ-uation proposed by Jung, is presented as a kind of mirror and reflection of ourselves. Therefore, the recovery of the figure of Gilgamesh will imply, in turn, the opening of a path towards another form of knowledge, the symbolic imagination.
