Abstract

Cova Gran de Santa Linya chrono-cultural sequence results from the excavations undertaken in three diff erent sectors -Ramp, Transition and Platform-, which have yielded over 40 AMS 14C dates. The earliest occupations documented are assigned to the Middle Palaeolithic period, overlayed by early Upper Palaeolithic units in the Ramp sector. This sequence addresses a key issue in the paleoanthropological discussion: the Neanderthal extinction and the anatomically modern humans (AMH) dispersal. The Magdalenian period is documented in the Transition and Platform sectors with assemblages dated to early, middle and upper Magdalenian. The top of the sequence from these two sectors yielded Holocene layers, ranging from early to fi nal Neolithic. On the top layers of the Platform sector, two phases were identifi ed, related to the use of the rock shelter for livestock herding purposes. The recurrent use of this environment for hunter-gatherers and farmers-shepherds makes it a privileged location for parsing the organizational transformations in the way of life of the inhabitants of the Pyrenees during the Prehistory.
