Resumen

The formation of the cave system in the Sierra de Atapuerca and its sedimentary filling are closely facies of Tres Simas and Zarpazos cavities are presented. These sediments are found in the lower part of keyhole cross sections that record the entren- chment of the system between the second and third levels of the Atapuerca karst, at the base of the Galería Complex. Here laminated sandy facies and clay beds suggest deposition under phreatic conditions. Electronic Paramagnetic Resonance (ESR) has been applied on quartz grains extracted from the sandy sediment. These new ages allow establishing a temporal relationship between these facies, previous dates available from similar deposits at the base of the Gran Dolina, and the existing ages for the river terraces of the Arlanzón River. The objective of this work is to establish a chronological and evo- lutionary framework for the formation of this interval of the fluvio-karst system of the Sierra de Atapuerca, which preceded the opening of the Gran Dolina and Gallery cavities and their infill by allochthonous deposits.
