Abstract

In the Introduction to the Grundlinien der Philosophie des Rechts, Hegel expounds briefly and essentially, his conception of a free will within the speculative framework of his philosophy. The preceding reflections on this theme are to be found in the first edition of his Enzyklopädie der philosophischen Wissenschaften im Grundisse [1817]. In the Introduction to the Grundlinien the conceptions of right itself and freedom suggest the main line of thought for Hegel’s understanding of the the will which is free in and for itself as developed in different stages. We contend that Hegel’s account of the will is a cornerstone for the whole argument of “Abstract Right”, “Morality” and “Ethical Life”.
